About our patching & maintenance solutions
Here at Midlands Road Surfacing, we strive to provide the most comprehensive, durable and cost-effective solutions to every driver’s bane: potholes.
Potholes form thanks to changes related to water and temperature conditions. When water gathers underneath the top layer of a road, the surface, it begins washing away some of the lower layers and surrounding soil. This creates a weakness, ultimately causing the top layers to crumble.
Temperatures – freezing, thawing, and evaporation – also play a part. On those chilly sub-zero winter days, the groundwater beneath the road’s surface freezes and expands, pushing the asphalt up. When it warms, the ice melts and the water runs off or evaporates, leaving a hole.
When potholes form, fixing them as soon as possible is imperative. Repairing potholes involves cutting out the affected areas, cleaning out debris and filling it with new asphalt. We apply the new material in gradual layers, compacting and smoothing each one to ensure a snug, watertight fit. This continues until the road surface is entirely smooth once again.
Midlands Road Surfacing brings over thirty years of experience and the latest technology to patching potholes. No matter how dire your road’s condition is, we’ll fix it quickly and cost-effectively.

Frequently asked questions
Got a question about our patching and maintenance service? Check out our FAQs below for more information. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please get in touch.
Potholes are usually caused by weathering and road surface erosion due to rainfall, freezing and thawing, and vehicle traffic.
If you don’t own the road where you find a pothole but it’s affecting your business, safety, or vehicle condition, submit a complaint to your local council. Most have a dedicated online form or phone number related to pothole reporting.
Repairing one small pothole doesn’t take long - a few hours, at most. However, it might take a lot longer if there are many tiny potholes or more significant, deeper potholes.
We use the same material as the road or car park itself, meaning this is almost always asphalt or macadam.
We don’t recommend trying to fix a pothole yourself, especially when the safety of the public is involved. The result might be dangerous and could leave you liable for injuries or damage. The repair might also not last very long, making it more expensive in the long run.
The cost of repairing a pothole varies depending on the size and location of the pothole, as well as the materials and labour needed for the repair.
As soon as you notice the road surface dropping into the ground below, contact the relevant authorities or organise a repair job. The longer it’s left, the more likely it’ll harm something or someone.
This depends on several factors, such as the surface material and severity of the potholes. In general, pothole repair is cheaper, but in extreme cases, we might recommend complete resurfacing. This is likely cheaper in the long run, as well as more aesthetically pleasing than a patchwork street.
Potholes can be hazardous to drivers and cyclists. They can cause flat tyres, damage to wheels and suspension, and loss of vehicle control.
Regular maintenance, washing, and sealing can help prevent potholes from forming. It’s also worth mentioning that the fewer heavy vehicles (lorries, cranes, HGVs, tractors, etc.) that drive or park on your surface, the longer it’ll last.
